The Wheel of Time was a favorite series of a few friends of mine, but I never tackled it and so I missed my first potential exposure to Sanderson’s talent. Shai agrees still planning to escape, but throughout the 100 days Shai was given she realizes that she must keep her promise for the sake of her country.I first heard Brandon Sanderson’s name when he was hired to complete Robert Jordan’s mammoth The Wheel of Time fantasy series after Mr. Shai was imprisoned and sentenced to death, however the corrupt guards of the Emperor bargain that they will let her go if she forges a new soul for the brain dead Emperor. The Emperor's Soul won a Hugo Award for best Novella in 2013. The Novella was included in Arcanum Unbound in 2016. The Emperor's Soul is a Novella that takes place in the same world as Elantris although it isn't a direct sequel. The Hope of Elantris was written to be read after Elantris, and takes place during the climax.
He named the main character, Matisse, after the student, then had Emily give the story to her. Sanderson at the time had been wanting to write more content for Elantris, and upon hearing this decided to just go for it. Emily told him about a student she had who did a really out-done book report of Elantris. The Hope of Elantris was written when Sanderson was still dating his wife Emily. Raoden finds himself with perhaps the most important mission of all: restoring Elantris to its former glory, and perhaps unlock its secrets on the way.
Prince Raoden and former heir to the thrown, was taken by the Shaod and secretly sent to the decaying city of Elantris. Hrathen came to the city Kae to convert the kingdon to his religion of Shu-Dereth, which just might mean the destruction of Arelon.
Now considered a widow the new princess of Arelon struggles to take apart the tyranny that has emerged in the dustruction of Elantris. Sarene comes to her new city of Kae, Capital of Arelon, crouching beneath the great city of Elantris, just to find her soon-to-be husband had been announced dead. The Disease quickly spread through out the whole city turning the magical demigods into powerless and fragile beings, Elantris itself decaying and falling apart, to be a place of filth and distruction. Elantris was a radiant city teeming with the most benovolent of people, but that all changed when the Shaod struck.
